Introduction

Fewer owners especially in private sector bother to seek consulting engineering services from the qualified engineers in the design and construction activities in Nepal. The structural engineering field remains no exception to this pathetic situation.

There is much ignorance about the role of a structural engineer, for example, what he can do and why his service is important in various development activities especially related to construction. The role of the structural engineers is sine qua non to ensure the safety of the structures as per the prevailing codes of practice. Otherwise the structure may be rendered unserviceable or suffer collapsed prematurely due to foundation settlement, liquefaction, explosion, overcrowding, overloading, storm and earthquake during its life time.

Even during construction period, there are many cases of tragic failures of structures causing extensive property damage and human casualties. The role of the structural engineer in a construction project is necessary right from the planning stage to the post-implementation stage.

Evidently selection of type of structure, optimum structural system, relevant codes of practice and construction procedure are vital for the economical viability as well as overall success of the project apart from the structural safety considerations.

The structural engineers in the country have long felt the need of an association of professionals engaged on structural design to ameliorate the miserable conditions of haphazard and non-standard construction practice prevalent in the country. It is a pity that even the high ranking policy makers including engineers are oblivious about the significance of the structural safety. The structural engineers in the country have decided to put forth a joint effort through SEANep.
