Role of SEANep
SEANep has been established in 2002 to accomplish the noble objectives defined in its constitution through the concerted efforts of a number of conscious structural engineers. The principal theme of structural design is to safeguard occupants or users, valuable equipment or instruments mounted in structures and envisaged activities inside the structures against premature structural failures and collapses during the life span of the structures.
SEANep can play a significant role among the stakeholders in the development activities, e.g., government bodies, donor agents, executing agencies, consultants, contractors, prospective clientele, investors, industries and builders. Living in safe structures will become an economically viable reality if we follow the design procedure.
The infrequent major earthquakes above magnitude of 8 on the Richter scale and the frequent moderate earthquakes pose substantial threat to the structures constructed without heeding requirements of the Earthquake Resistant Design (ERD). Due to the lack of knowledge and proper consultation, most of the constructions in the private sector are carried out to cater working vertical loads only. Provisions for resisting lateral loads emanating from wind and earthquake is almost missing or neglected.
There are several programs initiated to raise the level of knowledge related to earthquakes through various government and non-government sectors. SEANep can play roles as a facilitator as well as a service provider in this area.
